Domain Price Increase – Renew Now!

September 22nd, 2008

Both Verisign for the .COM/.NET as Public Interest Registry (PIR) for the .ORG have announced price increases beginning either on the 1st of October or somewhere in November of this year.

If you have domains you wish to renew or keep for the coming years, it is well worth to add a couple of years of registration! Especially if you live outside the US, take advantage of the low US dollar vs the Euro :) .

Moniker is running a special/limited offer, $7,29/yr for each registration, renewal or transfer.

New wave of cyber-theft involves names of Web sites

August 20th, 2008

“Officials at Lemon Sponge Cake Contemporary Ballet in Boulder were shocked to discover recently that their Web site had disappeared off the face of the Internet.

“We had bought the domain name from NameSecure, which is kind of ironic,” said Jenifer Sher, the ballet company’s executive director. “I guess it must have expired, but we didn’t receive any renewal notices.”

To make matters worse, Sher couldn’t send or receive e-mails, because her address was tied to the Web site.”

Excellent article (although in this case it is not really theft) that shows how important a domainname can be, that you need to choose a trustworthy registrar and, most importantly, need to keep your contact details up to date!

“How does becoming wealthier than Frank Schilling sound? Schilling, the most successful individual domainer in the world, has a portfolio of about 300,000 names, estimated revenue of $20 million dollars per year, and has received several 9-figures offers for his portfolio. Yet according to long-time IDN investor and IDN expert David Wrixon, “[t]here are IDN investors out there that will make Frank Schilling look like an amateur.”

When it comes to making money in domaining, there are many strategies. But if you are looking to capitalize on one strategy that holds a lot of potential, you should check out IDNs. Although you may never be as successful as Schilling, the timing for getting into IDNs is good.”

“How does a salary of $10,000 per day sound to you? Webmaster and marketing extraordinaire Marcus Frind reportedly pulls in $10,000 per day in Google AdSense from his dating website PlentyofFish.com. But that’s chump change compared to the $100,000 per day that domainer Yun Ye was pulling in before he sold his domain portfolio for about $164M in 2004 and subsequently disappeared under the radar.”

Tips for finding Expired Domains with Value

January 22nd, 2008

“As an online marketer and someone who is always on the lookout for expired domains , I thought I would share a few tips to find domains from a search engine marketing perspective.Granted, there are a lot of domains that drop every day; and there are a lot of domain names that are put in the expired domain name auctions. You could just find a list of domains (several registrars and other sites publish them) and look through them, picking out good generic domains. That’s one way to do it. There are, though, other ways to find domain names that may have traffic or value.”

Switching to a new Domain without losing your Rankings

“You’ve got a site that needs a new domain. Maybe it’s a rebranding issue, or maybe it’s a folder or subdomain that has outgrown the current site. There may be dozens of reasons why your currently indexed and well-ranked site needs a new domain name.Unfortunately, Google doesn’t seem to recognize that you’ve simply changed the URL of an existing site, and ends up subjecting the new domain to the aging delay as if it were a brand new out-of-the-box site. It doesn’t seem fair when you’ve struggled to earn the rankings you have now! You really can’t afford to lose the traffic you already have, but there is a real business need for the change. What should you do?”
